Teaching Experience

University of Oklahoma

ENGL 1113: Principles of Composition I                           Fall 2019 – Present

Students learn how to explore motivations behind the thoughts and opinions of themselves and others. The first in a two-course sequence, this class designed to teach students the knowledge and skills they will need to deliberate over public issues. Such skills are essential not only within the university but also within a democracy. This course offers the opportunity to investigate and write about values—one’s own and others’—and the way those values are reflected in beliefs and actions. In order to do so, students learn primary and secondary research methods, effective writing strategies, and formal speaking techniques, skills that will be of value in English 1213 and beyond. By the end of the course, students know how to use inquiry and writing to learn more about themselves, the communities they live in, and the values and worldviews that are vital to both.

ENGL 1213: Principles of Composition II                         Spring 2020 – Present

This class offers students the chance to study an issue of public importance and learn what people are arguing about, why they’re not convincing one another, and who is impacted by the issue. Building on the work of English 1113, students first seek to understand others’ perspectives, exploring ways of listening to others that can draw them out of their echo chambers and help them engage with others in respectful and productive dialogue. Students will study how arguments work, using analytical tools such as stasis theory to gain a more complex understanding of public issues. Then, they will intervene in the public controversy, designing arguments that will convince individuals and/or groups to change their minds or actions. By the end of this class, students will be prepared to use primary and secondary research methods and effective composing strategies to engage in public conversations about important issues both within the university setting and beyond.
